Patrick Mahomes thought the Chiefs played a clean game.

At the conclusion of the Chiefs’ 30-17 win over the Lions on Sunday night, star safety Brian Branch started a massive brawl after he refused to shake Mahomes’ hand and instead slapped Juju Smith-Schuster across the face.

Mahomes didn’t like the fight one bit.

“We play the game in between the whistles,” Mahomes said after the game. “They can do all the extracurricular stuff they want to do, but we play the game in between the whistles. And we thought we played a great game today, and we’ll keep this momentum moving forward.”

Lions coach Dan Campbell also lambasted Branch’s actions, which could have made a battered Detroit team even more thin than they already are.

“I love Brian Branch, but what he did is inexcusable, and it’s not going to be accepted here,” Campbell told reporters. “It’s not what we do. It’s not what we’re about, and I apologize to coach [Andy] Reid and the Chiefs and [Smith-Schuster]. That’s not OK. That’s not what we do here, and it’s not going to be OK. He knows it, our team knows it and so, that’s not what we do.”

Detroit is already down its top two cornerbacks, among others.

Branch apologized for the incident but also defended himself a bit, calling out Smith-Schuster for a dirty play that occurred with three minutes left in a game that had mostly been decided.

“It was a childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between the play and refs don’t catch it,” Branch said postgame. “They be trying to bully me out there. I should have never did it. It was childish.”

The incident is under review by the league, per NFL Network, and it could result in disciplinary action.
