Why Jets travelled to London so early ahead of facing Broncos

The Jets left for London on Monday, much earlier than they have traveled in the past for the overseas game.

The Jets face the Broncos on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Under former coach Robert Saleh, the team traveled last year on Thursday and practiced in England on Friday before their game with the Vikings.

Aaron Glenn said he wanted to get over to England earlier to give the players more time to adjust.

“I always felt guys got acclimated a lot quicker when you go early,” the first-year head coach said. “That’s just something I believe in. It will be a good trip for us. We’re going there for one reason and that’s to go win the game. I look forward to the work that we’re going to have this week.”

This is Glenn’s first trip to London as a head coach, but he has been there as a player and an assistant coach with the Saints.

The Jets will practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Jets players said they are hoping this provides some team-bonding time.

“It’s kind of like what training camp’s supposed to be,” defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said. “Those teams that go away for training camp, which I’ve been a part of, you don’t go to some Division III college and stay in some crappy dorm because it’s best for an NFL player. You do it to build a team. In a very condensed motion, we’re going to be on buses together, we’re going to be on planes together, we’re going to be away at a hotel in London together as a team. This is a moment where we have to lock arms and lean into one another. It could set us up for success.”

The Jets defense had another dismal day on Sunday against the Cowboys.

Is Glenn considering any personnel changes?

“I say this every week: You earn your keep,” Glenn said. “You earn your keep. We’re always looking at that. Who gives us the best chance to win? That does not mean that we’re having wholesale changes, week in and week out. I do expect the players to earn their keep during the week.”

CB Michael Carter II did not travel with the team Monday as he still works his way through the concussion protocol.

Glenn said Carter may join them later this week, depending on his progress.

LB Kiko Mauigoa suffered a sprained foot in the loss to the Cowboys.

The Jets are already thin at the position with Quincy Williams and Marcelino McCrary-Ball on injured reserve.

The Jets signed WR/KR Isaiah Williams to the practice squad.

The team waived him Saturday following his fumble in last week’s loss to the Dolphins.

The team announced WR Allen Lazard did not travel to London with the team due to a personal reason.

He could travel later in the week and play.
