Giants can't just abandon their Russell Wilson plan

It would have been absolutely ridiculous for Brian Daboll after one game to pull Russell Wilson and insert rookie Jaxson Dart as the starting quarterback. And a man in Daboll’s position, just as Jack Woltz stressed in no uncertain terms to Tom Hagen in “The Godfather,” can’t afford to be made to look ridiculous.

Of course, Daboll confirmed on Monday that Wilson will remain the starting quarterback. The entire organization would lose credibility for signing Wilson, giving him $10.5 million and then discarding him after one game. And all that talk about the leadership and professionalism and the exacting process Wilson brought to the building would have been words without meaning. And everyone would look silly for preaching how Dart needs time to develop and then limiting that time to one week into his first season.

The head coach would have been capricious if he announced that Dart will start Sunday against the Cowboys. Wilson played his part in the abomination that was the Giants offense in their season-opening 21-6 loss to the Commanders. Wilson, 36, did not rise above any of the mishaps and misadventures of his comrades in arms and he is going to have to sharpen his performance to stay atop the depth chart.

Let’s see how Wilson and an offensive line that was oh so shabby in Week 1 are impacted by the expected return of left tackle Andrew Thomas. Wilson deserves at least that much.
