Jauan Jennings and the 49ers have come to an agreement to rework his contract to add play-time incentives that can boost his potential 2025 earnings.

The Niners agreed to add $3 million in play-time incentives that would increase his earnings to as much as $10.5 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The NFL insider reported that talks between the receiver and the 49ers had picked up after he recovered from his calf injury and that he had turned down a multiyear deal in order to figure out a one-year agreement, which would still make him a free agent after this season.

Jennings was scheduled to make $7.5 million this season.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters earlier in the day that Jennings was going to play in the 49ers’ season opener against the Seahawks.

Jennings returned to practice on Monday and Shanahan said it was “awesome” to have him back out in practice.

“We love J.J. When he is not there, he is greatly missed,” Shanahan said, according to The Athletic. “The way he carries himself, the energy he plays with and how good of a player he is makes everyone very excited.”

The 49ers coach also said that there was no ill will over the attempt by the receiver to get a pay raise, making the comments before the news that broke Wednesday night.

“That was never personal. It’s business. And that’s a tough thing about this,” Shanahan said, per The Mercury News. “I want every player to make as much money as possible. I want every coach. I want everybody to.

“It’s just hard in situations to always do that.”

Jennings is coming off a 2024 season in which he had a career-high 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns in his fourth year with the 49ers.
