This Phillies analyst had no use for Alec Bohm’s antics Monday night.
Ricky Botallico — known as Ricky Bo — called out the third baseman for delaying the game for a lengthy period by pointing out a parabolic microphone in the outfield during the Mets’ 13-3 win.
“Let’s talk about Alec Bohm over at third base,” Botallico said on the NBC Sports Philadelphia postgame broadcast Monday. “OK, Alec you had a good defensive game but what really kind of got to me: You caused a 19-minute delay on something that’s been there since at least 2017, we went back and checked, that exact same thing has been there since 2017.”
NBC Philadelphia host Michael Barkann replied: “A parabolic microphone.”
“Whatever it is, it doesn’t matter,” Botallico responded.
Monday’s contest between NL East rivals took an odd turn in the fifth inning after Bohm hit into a double play while facing lefty Jose Castillo in a 3-3 game.
Bohm pointed out the glare from the parabolic microphone in the outfield, and it could be seen shining during a replay of the double play.
The glare apparently affected Bohm since it aligned with Castillo’s arm slot.
“There was a microphone in center field that somebody must have turned and, so, it was facing the plate and a glare must have come off it out of the left-hander’s arm slot, the ball was coming right out of that disk,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “They had to get it out of there.”
SNY analyst Gary Cohen, like Bottalico, could not believe the game stopped for an extended time, which the Associated Press estimated to be around 10 minutes.
“This is one of the sillier delays I’ve ever seen,” Cohen said.
Citi Field staffers attended to the microphone before the game resumed and it all went south for the Phillies from that point forward.
The Mets took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a Mark Vientos RBI double and ultimately scored the game’s final 13 runs to take the first matchup of this three-game set.
The Phillies still lead the division by six games, but they have now lost eight straight games in Flushing, including all four this season.
The Mets send struggling southpaw Sean Manaea to the mound against fellow lefty Jesus Luzardo on Tuesday night.
