The new-look US Open Mixed Doubles tournament gets started today and one major tennis star is continuing her comeback.

Venus Williams received a wildcard entry into the tournament alongside partner Reilly Opelka. Williams, 47, and Opelka, 27, became friends partly due to their South Florida roots.

Opelka told the Tennis Channel, “We have a lot in common. We both love tennis, both love art, we both live in South Florida. We practiced together in West Palm Beach a few times. Traveling and playing a lot of the same tournaments, we went to museums and art galleries. We’re both foodies. A great friendship.”

Williams returned to tennis after over a year hiatus in the July 2025 DC Open. There, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion became the second oldest player to win a WTA tour singles match. Williams and Opelka are making their Grand Slam debut as a pairing, but Williams is no stranger to doubles tennis with 16 Grand Slam doubles titles.
