Ten points to Slytherin for Tom Felton’s new gig.
The actor, 37, is set to reprise his beloved role as Draco Malfoy for his Broadway debut in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
Felton played the blonde antagonist in all eight “Harry Potter” movies from 2001 to 2011 alongside Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley.
On Thursday, the Today show announced that Felton will take over the part from Aaron Bartz at the Lyric Theatre in New York City starting on November 11 for 19 weeks.
The show debuted in London in 2016, before heading to Broadway in 2018. The stage production starring Felton will be the first time an actor from the original films has performed in “Cursed Child.”
“It’s very much a pinch-me kind of situation,” he told hosts Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie.
“I keep thinking I’m dreaming. I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now getting a chance to step back into his shoes — as a father this time, in a new story — I get to meet Draco as an adult, which is very exciting.”
The NBC morning show also played a clip of Felton dressed as Draco. He shared that he did in fact cry when sporting the signature hairdo for the first time in a while, noting the “Harry Potter” films were “such a huge part of my childhood.”
“I’ve been very excited to share this news, and I had to keep it under wraps for quite a while,” he said.
“Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he added in a statement to the network. “Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in ‘Cursed Child’ this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.”
“It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum-blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.”
Felton also posted the news on Instagram, writing, “Guess who’s back. For tickets, visit HarryPotterBroadway.com.”
Fans flocked to the comments section to share their excitement, with one user writing, “this is our 19 years later Draco we deserved.” A second person stated: “You just reminded the entire fandom why we never moved on.”
Chris Columbus, who directed the first two “Harry Potter” films, said that he would be up for bringing “Cursed Child” to the screen, with Radcliffe, 35, Grint, 36, and Watson, 36, portraying their beloved characters as adults.
“A version of Cursed Child with Dan, Rupert and Emma at the right age, it’s cinematic bliss,” the filmmaker, 66, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021.
“To able to actually see these adult actors now back in these roles? Oh, yeah. It would be amazingly fun to make that film — or two films.”
Along with Broadway, the “Harry Potter” world is expanding in a new HBO series. The show is set to premiere in 2026, with each season following one of J.K. Rowling’s seven “Harry Potter” books.
The network cast Dominic McLaughlin to play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton in the role of Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,” the series’ director Mark Mylod and showrunner Francesca Gardiner shared in a statement last month.
“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,” they continued. “We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
In February, it was announced that John Lithgow was headed to Hogwarts, to take on the role of Professor Albus Dumbledore.
“I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to ‘Harry Potter,’” the actor, 79, told ScreenRant. “That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”
