The Jets didn’t play a game this past weekend. They, of course, don’t play games at this time of year, having established that pattern by missing the playoffs the past 14 seasons.
The Jets did, however, lose over the weekend, because the best candidate for their vacant head coaching job, Mike Vrabel, was hired by the Patriots.
Gang Green interviewed Vrabel on Jan. 3, and should have made it clear to him that day that he was their man, even though they had not yet completed the league’s Rooney Rule interview requirements.
That, however, wasn’t possible because Vrabel was always going to New England, where he played, and was simply using the Jets as leverage. He was never going to agree to terms to coach them before letting whatever was going to happen in New England play out.
