# YouTube Introduces Labeling System for AI-Generated Music

The labeling system will provide additional information about the specific role of AI in creating tracks on YouTube's player page.

YouTube Music has launched a new labeling system aimed at increasing transparency around songs created using generative artificial intelligence (AI). This move is part of a growing trend to address concerns about AI-generated music flooding streaming platforms.

The new label will be visible on the player page and clicking on it will provide additional information about the specific role of AI in creating the track. Notably, this labeling system will also extend to the main YouTube app.

YouTube collaborated with various music partners and used its own detection tools to identify AI-generated music. The company has introduced three designations that music partners can use to declare their work's use of generative AI: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI, and No Gen AI.

The "Fully Gen AI designation applies to tracks entirely generated by AI, while the Partly Gen AI label refers to works where artists incorporated AI-generated components but added their own live elements. Music edited using pitch-correction tools like Auto-Tune falls under the No Gen AI category.

This development comes as AI-generated music is rapidly expanding across streaming services and many platforms are adopting their own approaches. For instance, Apple Music plans to introduce its own Made With AI" labels later this year as part of its AI Transparency Tags initiative.

YouTube's approach to AI-generated music is distinct from that of its competitors. While Deezer and TIDAL have taken steps to exclude AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, YouTube focuses on disclosure rather than blanket restrictions.

The platform has introduced new labels intended to inform listeners about the role of AI in music creation. However, these labels do not automatically disqualify AI-generated music from monetization. In fact, YouTube is experimenting with its own AI-powered music creation tool, known as Dream Track, which allows select creators to generate soundtracks featuring AI-generated versions of participating artists' voices.

Deezer's approach to AI-generated music has been more restrictive than that of TIDAL and YouTube. The platform reports receiving nearly 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, which it labels and excludes from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists. Deezer also withholds royalties from fraudulent streams associated with these tracks.

TIDAL, on the other hand, detects recordings it identifies as entirely AI-generated and allows listeners to disable them. These recordings are also excluded from royalty attribution.

The Disrupt conference in San Francisco is offering a special promotion from October 13 to 15, allowing attendees to purchase a second pass at half price.
