# Yemeni Government Warns of Collapse of Health Facilities in Taiz

The Yemeni government has issued a dire warning about the situation in Taiz, a city in the country's southwest that has been under siege by Houthi forces for an extended period. The city's health facilities are on the brink of collapse due to a severe shortage of essential supplies.

Medicines, intravenous fluids, medical equipment, and fuel are rapidly running out at hospitals in Taiz, leaving patients and healthcare workers facing an unprecedented crisis. Emergency care services, surgeries, intensive care units, dialysis treatment, and neonatal care may soon be forced to shut down due to the lack of supplies.

The fuel shortages have a double impact, as they also threaten the operation of electricity generators, ambulances, and refrigeration systems that keep medicines and vaccines usable. This could lead to severe complications and potentially preventable deaths among patients who rely on these essential services.

The Yemeni government has called for an immediate lifting of the siege and the reopening of supply routes to allow safe passage for patients, healthcare workers, and aid deliveries.

The humanitarian crisis in Taiz is reaching critical levels as the Houthi siege tightens its grip on the city. The Yemeni government has warned that every passing day increases the risk of service interruption and loss of life at local hospitals.

The Houthis' control over northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, which they seized by force in 2014, has allowed them to impose their own government and restrict access to key regions. The group's influence stretches across the country's north and northeast, complicating efforts to deliver aid and services to affected areas.

Taiz has a history of withstanding Houthi sieges, having endured a devastating blockade between 2015 and 2016 when Yemeni government forces were confined to an enclave in the city centre. Although the siege was eventually broken, the Houthis maintained control over other access points, limiting the flow of goods and people into the city.

The current siege, which began taking shape in early October, has seen the Houthis launch a successful offensive along the Red Sea coast, capturing key cities like Mocha and At Turbah. These gains have effectively cut off Taiz's main road to government-held areas, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the city.

The humanitarian crisis in Taiz has intensified as the Houthi siege continues to tighten its grip on government-held areas. The director-general of the Yemeni government's planning and development office in Taiz governorate estimates that around 2.8 million people reside in these areas, along with an additional 200,000 who have recently been displaced due to the conflict.

The scarcity of fuel has become a major concern, leading to skyrocketing prices on the black market. A standard container of petrol now costs approximately $58, up from $19 just a few months ago. This shortage is having a devastating impact on the daily lives of Taiz residents, who are struggling to access basic necessities.

The international community's warnings about the dire situation in Yemen have gone largely unheeded, with no significant intervention or response forthcoming. As a result, the fragile health system in the country teeters on the brink of collapse, putting millions of civilians at risk.
