The Americans settled for the silver medal Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to host country Japan at Yokohama Baseball Stadium. This was the first softball competition at the Summer Games since the U.S. previously lost the gold medal to Japan at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The game was scoreless until Japan plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings against U.S. pitchers Cat Osterman, Monica Abbott and Ally Carda after Team USA had posted a walk-off victory over Japan the previous day.
Canada defeated Mexico earlier Tuesday to take the bronze medal.
