# US lawmakers request appearance from Jensen Huang over Chinese espionage concerns

US lawmakers have invited Jensen Huang to a joint closed-door briefing amid allegations of Chinese spying.

US lawmakers have requested an appearance from Jensen Huang, CEO of leading graphics card manufacturer Nvidia, amid concerns over Chinese espionage.

The request comes after reports surfaced suggesting US intelligence officials believe Huang has been targeted by a Chinese spying operation. The allegations center on the involvement of a Chinese woman named Alice Huang, who works at Megaspeed, a Singapore-based cloud company that purchases large quantities of Nvidia's chips.

The chairs of key House committees on China, foreign affairs, and intelligence have written to Huang, inviting him to attend a joint closed-door briefing for their committees on November 18. The letter highlights concerns over the potential compromise of sensitive US technology and information by Chinese entities.

According to the lawmakers, the issue of Chinese infiltration and access to cutting-edge US tech is a major focus area for their investigative work this Congress. They emphasize that it's essential for Congress to determine the extent to which US national security has been compromised in this regard.

The move comes after The New York Times reported last week that US intelligence officials believe Jensen Huang was being targeted by Chinese operatives, fueling concerns over potential espionage activities.

Nvidia has denied any wrongdoing regarding allegations of espionage concerns related to its interactions with China. The company maintains that meetings with customers are a routine part of a CEO's job and that Jensen Huang engages in thousands of such conversations every year.

In response to the accusations, Nvidia stated that it provides ordinary business information to regional cloud customers, not sensitive trade secrets or national security-related data. This assertion appears aimed at addressing concerns over potential leaks of confidential information.

Lawmakers have requested a discussion with Huang about Nvidia's security protocols and how they protect against foreign adversary espionage. The company claims its CEO is accompanied by an outstanding security team during business trips, suggesting that adequate measures are in place to safeguard sensitive information.

Nvidia also expressed confidence that the US government would have notified the company if it believed a person was a threat to national industry. This assertion implies that Nvidia relies on regular updates from Washington regarding individuals of concern.

Nvidia's internal investigation into its partnership with Megaspeed in Singapore found no evidence that its chips were being diverted to China. This probe was launched after Nvidia became aware of US concerns regarding the potential misuse of its technology.

The company's supply chain has faced intense scrutiny due to tightened US export controls, which have led to increased smuggling attempts of its chips. A key partner in this supply chain, Supermicro co-founder Wally Liaw, was arrested earlier this year and charged with smuggling Nvidia chips into China, although he denies any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty.
