# Ukraine's Air Raid Alert App Hacked

The hacking incident caused widespread confusion among users of Ukraine's air raid alert app, which issued false warnings of radiation threats in Kyiv.

Reports are emerging of a hacking incident affecting Ukraine's air raid alert app on Sunday evening, which caused widespread confusion among users.

The app, which sends alerts to Ukrainians about potential air strikes and other threats, suddenly began issuing false warnings of radiation threats in the capital city of Kyiv.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the hack occurred at approximately 22:47 local time (20:47 GMT), when red-level air raids were apparently issued nationwide. The messages were sent through the app's Telegram channel.

Users who received the alerts were advised by the Ukrainian Central Intelligence Agency to use other sources of information to verify the situation and not rely solely on the app for updates.

The sudden change in alerts from the Air Alert app was a stark contrast to the initial messages that had been sent out earlier. At 23:53, users who were still connected to the previous Kyiv alerts received individual "all clear" messages on their phones, declaring each threat null and void.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Central Intelligence Agency issued a separate warning via Telegram, cautioning that the Radiation Hazard signal had been mistakenly broadcast through loudspeaker devices in the Lviv region. The agency emphasized that there was no actual radiation hazard present.

In light of these developments, Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation advised citizens on how to verify information when the Air Alert app is not functioning properly. They were instructed to activate notifications on their smartphones and pay attention to sirens, as well as only rely on official sources for updates.

Several regional governors took to Telegram to share their own experiences with the compromised app. Svitlana Onyshchuk, governor of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, reported that a red-level air raid alert had been incorrectly issued for her region between 22:50 and 23:57.

The governor of Vinnytsia oblast, Natalya Zabolotna, also posted on Telegram to warn residents about a potential phishing attempt. She stated that the Air Alert app had indeed been subject to a cyber-attack and cautioned users not to click on any suspicious links sent via the app.

As maintenance work continued on the compromised app, the Ministry of Digital Transformation urged citizens to ensure their smartphones' emergency notifications were activated. This would enable residents to receive state-issued distress signals in real-time, providing an alternative means of staying informed during emergencies.

A cyberattack on Russia's emergency situations app has been reported just hours after a similar hack affected Ukraine's air raid alert system.

The Russian ministry of emergency situations stated that their app had been subjected to a massive cyberattack, which sent fake information to the public. However, no further details were provided by the ministry or state media regarding the nature and extent of the attack.

In related news, Ukrainian news outlet UNN reported that the hack on Ukraine's air raid system was allegedly carried out by Atesh, a partisan Ukrainian group operating inside Russian-held territory. According to UNN, the group claimed responsibility for the hack.

The fake emergency alerts sent to users in both countries have raised concerns about the potential consequences of such hacking incidents during times of conflict and crisis.
