# School Roof Collapse in Peshawar Leaves at Least 33 Dead

At least 33 students and a teacher have been confirmed dead after a devastating school roof collapse in Peshawar, Pakistan's northwestern city.

The incident occurred at the private Al-Khair school in Dir Colony on Thursday morning, with emergency services alerted to the tragedy at 08:48 local time. Several children are feared trapped under the rubble, adding to the sense of urgency and desperation among rescue teams.

According to hospital officials, over a dozen others have been injured in the collapse, with some reported to be in critical condition. The severity of their injuries is a major concern for medical staff, who are working tirelessly to treat those affected.

The school's structure has come under scrutiny, with reports suggesting that it was built on a temporary basis. This raises questions about the safety and stability of the building, particularly given its multi-story design.

Rescue officials have confirmed that classrooms on three floors were affected by the collapse, with approximately 30 students in the top class, 40 in the middle class, and 45 on the ground floor.

The school's roof collapse has raised concerns about the structural integrity of buildings in Pakistan, particularly those constructed on narrow streets where accessibility is limited.

Rescue efforts were hindered by the location of Al-Khair school, which is situated on a narrow street that can only accommodate one vehicle at a time. This made it challenging for emergency responders to reach the site and transport injured students to nearby hospitals.

Preliminary reports indicate that 32 children and one teacher have been confirmed dead at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, while Naseerullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital has reported one additional fatality among the child victims.

Eyewitness accounts from local residents describe a chaotic scene as they rushed to assist in the rescue efforts. An English teacher from a nearby school said he was among those who immediately responded to the emergency, helping to pull out over 20 children from the rubble with other volunteers.

Local resident Sohail described using shovels to try and free trapped children, while police chief Mian Saeed has warned that the building remains unstable and poses an ongoing threat.

A thorough investigation is underway to determine whether building codes were violated in connection with the collapse of a school roof in Pakistan.

The police chief has confirmed that the owner of the school has been arrested, and an inquiry will gather all the facts about this incident.

In light of this tragedy, the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has ordered a safety audit of all schools in the region to identify potential risks and take corrective measures where necessary.

This move aims to ensure that children's safety is not compromised in any educational institution.
