# Russian Attacks Escalate in Zaporizhzhia Region

Fleeing residents of Preobrazhenka village are taking shelter in nearby Zaporizhzhia city from escalating Russian attacks.

Fleeing residents of Preobrazhenka village in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region are taking shelter from escalating Russian attacks in nearby Zaporizhzhia city.

Volodymyr, a resident who fled his home after witnessing the escalation, has seen firsthand the devastating impact of these attacks. He now resides in a local shelter, nursing burns on his hands and body from a recent bombardment.

The village where Volodymyr lived, Preobrazhenka, is just over 40km south of Zaporizhzhia city. It's one of several villages in the region that have come under increasing Russian fire power in recent times.

Russian attacks on this area reached a grim milestone last week when nine glide bombs struck the town of Komyshuvakha, killing at least 50 people and leaving many more missing or feared dead. The attack occurred while civilians gathered to receive humanitarian aid at a local school.

The use of Russian First-Person-View (FPV) drones has become increasingly common in this conflict, often serving as an indicator that ground troops are advancing on the area. Footage shows these drones deliberately targeting vehicles and civilians on streets, making life extremely difficult for residents caught in their path.

The city administration is taking measures to protect its residents from the ongoing drone attacks by installing anti-drone netting over streets and civilian infrastructure in areas like the Cosmos neighbourhood.

However, despite these efforts, the city's infrastructure shows the devastating impact of the drone strikes, with boarded-up windows and bombed-out buildings a common sight across Zaporizhzhia.

Regional military administration officials are preparing for worst-case scenarios, including relocating shelters where vulnerable residents are staying, such as Volodymyr's shelter in this neighbourhood.

Many residents who have been relocated to these shelters are elderly or have limited mobility, making evacuation even more challenging. Some also lack the necessary documents to relocate, further complicating the process.

Others prefer to stay put, holding on to hope that the war will end and they can return to their homes, including some internally displaced people who arrived in Zaporizhzhia from cities like Mariupol and Melitopol early in the conflict.

Zaporizhzhia residents are living under constant threat from Russian drone attacks, which have become a daily occurrence.

Petrol stations and businesses along the Pryberezhna Highway, which follows the river, are taking precautions by covering themselves in protective netting to prevent damage from falling debris.

Nataliia, an employee at one of these petrol stations, shared her concerns about the situation: "It's scary and dangerous, everything is flying around. Just today a drone flew over us."

Normalcy still exists in parts of the city, with twinkling lights hanging over restaurant terraces and some streets still bustling with life.

People are adapting to each new threat by taking measures such as covering streets with nets, installing drone jammers on buses, and even carrying personal drone detectors.

Children can be seen walking around with these devices, a testament to the growing sense of unease among residents. Bridges have been damaged in attacks, leaving gaping holes that pose a risk to pedestrians.

Authorities are preparing for the possibility of evacuation, but it's difficult to determine how many people remain in the city due to constant departures.
