# Reddit Requires Users to Log In for Full Access

Reddit is revamping its platform by requiring users to log in to access all features.

In a letter to shareholders detailing Q3 performance, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that the company will be shifting towards a logged-in-only experience. This move aims to provide users with the best possible experience, allowing them to find content and communities tailored to their interests.

The change is also expected to benefit Reddit's business operations by providing more signals for targeted advertising. As Huffman explained, being logged in typically leads to higher engagement rates compared to browsing anonymously. The login requirement will also enable Reddit to better protect its vast repository of user data and adapt to emerging global regulations.

Furthermore, the CEO noted that this shift will help Reddit retain new users who might be hesitant to create an account but still want access to the platform's content. By making logging in a prerequisite for full access, Reddit aims to encourage users to stay on the site for longer periods.

Reddit has announced plans to test its login requirement in select non-US markets during Q4. The results of these tests will inform the company's decision on how to implement a logged-in-only experience globally.

Reddit's search referral traffic has seen a significant decline in recent quarters, particularly among logged-out and web traffic. This trend continued into Q4, with Huffman noting that October saw more than 1 million fewer search referrals per week compared to the previous period.

The company is keeping a close eye on this development, as it could potentially impact its overall user base. If the current rate of decline continues, Reddit's total daily active unique users (DAUqs) may fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4, from its current base of 130 million DAUqs.

Interestingly, Reddit's average number of DAUqs actually increased by 12 percent year over year (YoY) in Q3. However, the search referral traffic decline suggests that users are increasingly turning to logged-in and app experiences instead of relying on search.

To further emphasize this point, Huffman highlighted that logged-in and app DAUqs are Reddit's most valuable user segment. This implies that the company is placing a priority on these users as it moves forward with its plans.

Reddit has been testing a login requirement on desktop since at least August, according to user reports. This move is part of a broader effort by the platform to become less dependent on search referrals and more focused on growing its logged-in user base.

As part of its efforts to transition to a logged-in-only experience, Reddit has implemented several changes that are expected to significantly impact user behavior and the platform's ability to collect data on its users.

The company is now blocking access to Old.Reddit.com for users who haven't logged in within the past six months. This move follows earlier restrictions that required users to be logged in to use the mobile web version of Reddit, which was introduced in July.

Reddit has also taken steps to discourage third-party app development by making its API expensive to use in 2024. As a result, most third-party apps have effectively been shut down.

The combination of these changes is expected to give Reddit a more comprehensive understanding of its user base and their behavior, which will help the company manage issues like AI scraping and evolving search habits, ultimately leading to improved ad effectiveness and increased appeal to advertisers and investors.
