# Record-breaking mountaineer achieves 20 summits on Mount Everest in 2022

A record-breaking mountaineer has spoken out about their remarkable journey to the top of Mount Everest, having achieved an unprecedented 20 summits by a non-Sherpa climber in 2022.

Growing up in Slough, Berkshire, in a bungalow next to a farm, this individual's love for nature and outdoor activities was fostered from a young age. Their father, a scout leader, encouraged their adventurous spirit with regular excursions into the countryside. As they grew older, family holidays became an opportunity to explore Wales, further deepening their connection with the natural world.

Their introduction to rock climbing came at 17, when a school friend took them to a local wall where he was an avid user. The physical challenge and problem-solving aspects of climbing quickly captivated their attention, and they soon found themselves visiting twice a week. As they entered sixth form, they began venturing further afield, embarking on their first real climbing outing in Dorset's south coast.

The experience sparked a passion that would stay with them throughout their life. Regular trips to the Peak District and Chamonix followed, where they honed their skills and learned valuable lessons about the importance of timing and preparation. Their initial foray into the Alps involved camping for five weeks and attempting Mont Blanc, an experience that was both exhilarating and humbling.

Their initial foray into the Alps involved camping for five weeks and attempting Mont Blanc, an experience that was both exhilarating and humbling. This experience sparked a desire to explore more challenging mountains and cultures. I spent several years working in ski and climbing shops during the off-season, allowing me to fund my passion for high-altitude climbing.

Over time, this dedication led me to climb across Europe, New Zealand, and Asia, facing treacherous conditions along the way. In 1996, a particularly harrowing incident occurred when I fell from a rock face, shattering both heel bones. Doctors were pessimistic about my recovery, warning that I might never walk unaided again.

However, I defied their predictions by undergoing several surgeries and spending three months in a wheelchair before eventually regaining the ability to climb and ski at high altitudes. This determination led me to take on even more challenging routes with a group of fellow climbers. In 2003, we established a trail on Annapurna III, a 7,555-metre peak in Nepal, earning us a nomination for a prestigious award.

This achievement caught the attention of a Sheffield-based adventure company, which approached me about guiding an expedition to Everest. Although I had never led at high altitude or reached such great heights before, they were willing to take a chance on my abilities. It was a significant leap of faith, but one that would ultimately set the stage for numerous future expeditions to the world's highest peak.

Climbing Mount Everest is a monumental task that requires meticulous planning and expertise. For one seasoned climber, this experience has become all too familiar, having reached the summit 20 times since their first attempt.

Their journey to the top was marked by periods of intense preparation, including up to three years of training with each new client. This dedication paid off as they successfully guided others on the treacherous mountain terrain. The climber's approachability and ability to facilitate someone else's journey made them a valuable asset in the industry.

The climber has had their fair share of close calls and setbacks, including one particularly harrowing incident where an oxygen delivery failure forced them to share tanks with another climber. However, they have also experienced moments of breathtaking beauty on the mountain. One notable instance was in 2017 when they reached the summit alone, surrounded by a serene landscape.

In addition to their numerous ascents of Mount Everest, this seasoned climber has also ventured onto adjacent peaks, including Nuptse in 2013. From its summit, they gazed back at years of memories etched on the mountain's slopes. This experience was particularly poignant given the sheer remoteness and unforgiving conditions of the Himalayas.

Their extensive experience on Mount Everest has not shielded them from the harsh realities of climbing. A tragic encounter with a dying climber in 2013 remains seared in their memory, serving as a grim reminder that even the most seasoned climbers are vulnerable to the mountain's wrath.

The record for most Everest summits by a non-Sherpa now belongs to me after my 16th ascent in 2022. However, Kami Rita Sherpa holds the overall general record, and I am content with my own achievement. For me, it has never been about surpassing records but about accumulating experiences.

My connection to Mount Everest goes beyond just climbing; it's also about the people and places that have touched my life along the way. Over the years, I've formed lasting bonds with Sherpas who I've climbed with, as well as locals who have welcomed me into their homes and cared for me when I needed it most.

As much as Mount Everest has given me, I know there will come a time when I'll eventually hang up my climbing gear. But until then, the mountain remains an integral part of my life, and its people are what truly make it special.
