# Pentagon Breach Compromises Data of Over 2 Million Military Members

A major breach at the Pentagon has compromised the sensitive personal information of over 2 million current and former military members. The personnel records were stored on a network operated by the Defense Manpower Data Center, which collates Department of Defense personnel data.

The stolen records include Social Security numbers, names, addresses, sex, race, and occupational specialty. This type of information could be valuable to foreign adversaries seeking to identify high-value military personnel for intelligence purposes. The breach is particularly concerning given its duration, with hackers gaining access to the system in October last year.

The compromised records belong to 2.8 million living individuals. The Pentagon has begun informing affected members about the breach through notification letters. One such letter was posted on Reddit, providing a glimpse into the sensitive information that was stolen.

The recent breach is not an isolated incident. Last month, a ransomware group claimed it had hacked into FBI systems and stolen records of thousands of employees. Reuters reported that some of these job titles were related to investigating China or Russia.

The recent hacking incidents have raised concerns about the security of sensitive data in federal agencies. ShinyHunters, a group known for its involvement in high-profile hacks and extortion schemes, claims to have obtained valuable information from these breaches.

However, experts are skeptical about the group's intentions, given their history of exploiting compromised data for financial gain. Additionally, the sophistication of nation-state intelligence hackers suggests that ShinyHunters' cyber defenses may not be able to withstand a targeted attack.

The FBI has issued a public appeal to ShinyHunters members, urging them to turn themselves in before it's too late. Assistant Director Brett Leatherman emphasized that the longer they remain involved, the more the authorities will learn about their operations and identities.

Dutch police have already made one arrest related to ShinyHunters, demonstrating the effectiveness of international cooperation in tracking down cybercrime suspects.

The Defense Manpower Data Center, which manages sensitive information for over 60 million personnel and their family members affiliated with the US Department of Defense, has been hit by a data breach. The center, responsible for storing records on military personnel, civilians, contractors, retirees, and veterans, has not disclosed how the attackers gained access to its systems.

The department's officials have stated that the stolen data has not been misused, but they have not provided any information about how they arrived at this conclusion or whether ransom demands were made.
