# Max Verstappen secures pole position at Bahrain Grand Prix

Verstappen edged out Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by 0.298 seconds to take the top spot on the grid, securing his first pole position of the season.

Max Verstappen secured his first pole position of the 2026 season for Red Bull at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, edging out Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by a margin of 0.298 seconds.

Verstappen's impressive qualifying performance was consistent throughout all three sessions, where he consistently topped the timesheets and set himself up for a strong starting position on Sunday's main event.

Isack Hadjar secured third place for Red Bull but faces a five-place grid penalty due to a penalty, which will likely see Kimi Antonelli promoted to third spot. The Italian driver is currently leading the championship standings.

George Russell, Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton's closest rival in the championship, failed to make an impact in qualifying and ended up eighth fastest overall. Charles Leclerc secured fifth place for Ferrari ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from McLaren.

Fernando Alonso, who confirmed his F1 stay beyond 2027 just days ago, gave Aston Martin their best qualifying position so far this year with a solid 12th spot. The Spanish driver was narrowly beaten by Pierre Gasly from Alpine, as well as Gabriel Bortoleto from Audi and Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls.

The Sepang track in Malaysia has proven to be a challenging circuit for teams, but Red Bull's recent aerodynamic upgrade introduced at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix seems to have given them an edge. This upgrade is expected to play a significant role in determining the outcome of Sunday's main event.

Verstappen's recent resurgence has seen him overcome struggles with pace and balance that plagued much of the season, with his team making steady improvements to the car.

This turnaround is evident in his performance on qualifying day, where he secured a strong pole position despite a challenging year.

Hamilton's presence on the front row alongside Verstappen brings back memories of their intense title battle in 2021, when Hamilton was driving for Mercedes and pushing for a seventh championship.

The scorching heat has made conditions extremely difficult, with both drivers facing significant challenges in finding a good balance between car performance and tyre management.

The heat has continued to pose a significant challenge for drivers, with both teams struggling to find the perfect balance between car performance and tyre management.

Mercedes' hopes of securing pole position were dealt a blow when their driver finished 0.501secs off the pace, much further away than anticipated. The team had been hoping for a better result, but ultimately fell short.

The team's struggles were compounded by the fact that they only had one set of tyres to work with, which added significant pressure to their performance. In hindsight, having another set would have given them more options and potentially allowed them to fight for a front-row spot.

In contrast, Mercedes' team-mate struggled even more, finishing 0.240secs off the pace. The driver expressed frustration at the lack of pace, citing the demanding nature of the circuit on tyres as one possible reason for their struggles.

The weekend has also been tough for McLaren, who were tipped to be strong contenders due to their car's recent performances on similar tracks. However, they have lacked pace all weekend and are currently 0.627secs off the pace, with their best lap yet to come.

The improvements made to the chassis of the cars have had a significant impact on their performance at this track, where power sensitivity is lower.

Fernando Alonso's lap was his strongest qualifying performance of the year, and it suggests that the team's faith in making significant strides forward next season may not be misplaced. He believes the circuit suits their package better than others they've encountered so far.

The veteran driver described this as one of the best qualifying sessions for him all year, with a relatively small margin between his time and the top spot in Q2.
