It looks as if the Jets will need to wait another week to get back Jamison Crowder. Whether that means Denzel Mims will return after being inactive last Sunday is uncertain.
Crowder, the team’s leading receiver the previous two seasons, missed the season opener after testing positive for COVID-19 and was held out last week with a groin injury. He didn’t practice all week and is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Broncos.
Then there is Mims, the team’s second-round pick of a year ago. He received just three snaps in the first game and didn’t face the Patriots last Sunday after being buried down the depth chart during training camp. Head coach Robert Saleh has said the speedy 6-foot-3 Mims needs to learn all three receiver positions and be able to contribute on special teams.
“Game-time decision, we’ll see how it all works,” Saleh said of Mims. “But I’m pumped for Denzel and the week he’s had. Obviously, he’s growing just like the rest of the team is, so we’ll see on Sunday.”
Saleh wore a black Mepham High School football T-shirt, continuing his weekly pattern of honoring a local high school football program. The Long Island school is home to Sofia LaSpina, who became the first female to score a touchdown in a Long Island varsity football game last Saturday. She was named this week’s Jets/Gatorade High School Player of the Week on Monday.
“I thought that was pretty cool, and I know the organization is going to be inviting her to our next home game,” Saleh said. “So, hopefully she’s there screaming.”
The Jets’ next home game will be Oct. 3 against the Titans at MetLife Stadium.
DE John Franklin-Myers (calf) practiced fully on Friday and is questionable. RB Tevin Coleman (non-COVID-19 illness) is out. LB Jamien Sherwood (ankle), who missed the game against the Patriots, practiced fully the last two days and is expected to play.
The Broncos listed starting NT Mike Purcell (knee) and OG Graham Glasgow (illness) as questionable.
