# Jaguar Unveils New Electric Vehicle Type 01

Jaguar has launched the Type 01, an electric vehicle designed to elevate customer ownership experience and priced higher than previous models.

Global tensions are running high as multiple conflicts escalate worldwide. The ongoing climate crisis is causing widespread concern, while the recent outbreak of plague has added to people's anxiety levels. Furthermore, the scientific community is facing threats to its research, and artificial intelligence systems continue to raise questions about copyright infringement. In addition, the media landscape is increasingly fragmented, making it difficult for individuals to discern fact from fiction.

In a bid to shift attention away from these pressing issues, Jaguar recently unveiled its new electric vehicle, the Type 01. This marks the first model to be launched under the company's revamped brand strategy. The British carmaker had previously made an early entry into the modern electric vehicle market with the 2017 I-Pace.

However, the I-Pace was not without its flaws. Critics panned the car for being cramped inside and plagued by reliability issues. An all-electric sedan was initially planned to follow in its footsteps but was abruptly canceled a year after its scheduled release. This left Jaguar with a void in its product lineup as older models like the F-Pace ceased production.

Jaguar has since developed an entirely new electric vehicle platform called JEA, which will underpin its future all-electric offerings. The brand's intention is to provide customers with a more elevated ownership experience and price its vehicles at a significantly higher point than before, roughly double the previous entry price of $60,000.

To achieve this, Jaguar has been working on redefining its brand identity. As part of this effort, the company began teasing its relaunch last year, which sparked significant interest but also controversy. The backlash was further fueled when images of a sleek, pastel-shaded Type 00 coupe concept leaked online.

The unveiling of the Type 01 is seen as a major step in Jaguar's efforts to revamp its brand and regain market share. However, whether this new electric vehicle will be enough to quell critics' concerns remains to be seen.

The Type 01's design has undergone significant changes since its initial unveiling, evolving into a sleek four-door GT that incorporates reflectors for street legality and now features four doors instead of two. Gone is the brutalist shape, replaced by a more refined aesthetic that still manages to achieve an impressive drag coefficient of 0.23.

Interestingly, the Type 01 has followed in the footsteps of other electric vehicles by adopting a central rear-view camera system, eliminating the need for a traditional rear window and providing an unobstructed view through the dashboard screen. This technology is now proven and robust, making it a practical solution for many car manufacturers.

The vehicle's aerodynamics are complemented by its advanced battery pack, which boasts 118 kWh of usable capacity. This should enable drivers to cover approximately 400 miles on a single charge, although Jaguar Land Rover has yet to release an official EPA estimate that will be available closer to the car's US market launch in mid-2027.

The battery pack operates at a high voltage of 850 V, and Jaguar claims that charging from 10–80 percent can be achieved in just 22 minutes using a 350 kW DC fast charger. This rapid charging capability is a significant advantage for electric vehicle owners who need to top up their batteries on the go.

Manufacturing of the battery pack has already begun at one of Jaguar Land Rover's factories in the English Midlands, with multiple examples being produced and assembled during a recent visit by industry observers.

Jaguar's Formula E program has been a resounding success in recent years, securing its third team championship in four years and adding to the Jaguar TCS Racing squad's list of accolades. The experience gained from developing electric powertrains for racing has had direct benefits for road-going EVs.

As a result, the Type 01 boasts advanced technology, including silicon carbide inverters and a sophisticated traction control system. These components are expected to contribute to the car's impressive performance figures, which include all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and a substantial power output of 1,015 hp (757 kW) and 1,007 lb-ft (1,365 Nm).

However, despite these impressive specs, the Type 01 has faced criticism for its design. Some have questioned whether it effectively channels Jaguar's classic style, with one colleague remarking that it "sucks compared to previous models.

Others have expressed confusion about the car's intended target market, wondering who the Type 01 is supposed to appeal to. Meanwhile, a few defenders of the car have pointed out that it is still preferable to some other vehicles on the market, such as the Cybertruck.

The Type 01's price point is expected to be around $120,000-$130,000 MSRP, which may also raise eyebrows among potential buyers.

The Jaguar Type 01's design has sparked a mixed reaction from car enthusiasts, with some drawing comparisons to other electric vehicles on the market, such as the Cybertruck. However, this criticism is not unique to the Type 01, as the original Ford Edsel also received its fair share of negative comments when it was first introduced.

The Edsel's design was panned by critics, who described its front grille as looking like Oldsmobile with the prow of a Pierce-Arrow implanted in its front end" or even likened it to female genitalia. While these comparisons may be harsh, they do illustrate the subjective nature of car design and how different people can have vastly different opinions on what makes a vehicle look good.

In contrast, the interior of the Type 01 is a far cry from traditional Jaguars. Gone are the classic leather seats and wood trim, replaced instead by modern amenities such as a 7-inch touchscreen and a 24-inch OLED screen on the dashboard. The center spine also features storage compartments for added convenience.

Despite its sleek exterior design, the Type 01's price point may be a major turn-off for potential buyers. With an expected MSRP of around $120,000-$130,000, it's clear that this vehicle is aimed at a specific demographic with deep pockets.

The luxury electric market has become increasingly crowded in recent years, with brands like Ferrari and Jaguar vying for attention with their high-end models. However, not all of these vehicles have been met with universal acclaim - the Ferrari EV design, for example, was widely panned when it was first revealed.

Ultimately, the success or failure of a vehicle like the Type 01 will depend on its ability to appeal to buyers and stand out from the competition in a crowded market.
