# High-speed rail disaster occurs in Spain

Two trains collided near Mora and Orgaz municipalities on Wednesday morning, resulting in severe damage and injuries.

A high-speed rail disaster occurred on Wednesday morning in Spain when two trains collided near the municipalities of Mora and Orgaz.

The collision involved a train operated by state-owned Renfe, which was carrying 397 passengers from Madrid to Seville, and another operated by private company Iryo with 147 passengers.

According to reports, an issue with the automatic signalling system had caused all trains on the affected stretch to halt. However, in an apparent error, the Renfe train was ordered to proceed.

The crash occurred about 140km south of Madrid, resulting in severe damage and injuries.

Passengers on board were caught off guard as the trains travelled at high speeds before coming to a sudden stop, with some still asleep or working on their laptops.

As the train came to a sudden stop, passengers were caught off guard, some still asleep or working on their laptops.

Spanish journalist Roberto Gómez was dozing on the high-speed Renfe train when it halted more than 25km away from its intended destination.

The brief pause was followed by a few minutes of inactivity before the train began to move again, only to come to an abrupt stop once more.

Passengers were thrown into the air as the high-speed train careened out of control after being struck from behind.

The impact was so severe that it caused widespread destruction throughout the train, including in coach seven where eight victims were counted by one survivor.

In coaches farther away from the point of impact, the damage was still extensive, with seats torn loose and passengers thrown about as they faced forward.

One eyewitness described seeing people trapped between their seats, a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of the crash.

The destruction was so severe that pieces of train track were lodged in some of the coaches, which may have helped slow the train down but only served to heighten the sense of chaos and confusion among survivors.

Passengers in Binier's carriage were faced with a dire situation after the initial impact. Many had suffered injuries, including broken noses and arms, as they struggled to come to terms with what had just happened. The air was filled with smoke, making it difficult for them to see.

As they assessed their surroundings, some passengers debated whether it was safe to exit the train due to the presence of electrical wires strewn across the tracks. Others were concerned about the risk of another train colliding and decided to wait. However, those who did choose to leave were met with a harrowing sight.

Binier described seeing the extent of the damage when he took his first steps outside. The second train behind theirs was visible, but their own train had been completely flipped over, its back end filled with debris. This was a moment that left him in complete shock and awe, struggling to process the gravity of the situation.

The scene before them was one of chaos and devastation, with people in danger and dead bodies scattered about. Binier's account is graphic, detailing missing limbs and the difficulty of seeing through the smoke. Despite his own trauma, he credits adrenaline for helping him and others who were uninjured to spring into action.

Local residents soon arrived on the scene, followed by police and ambulance services from the Guardia Civil. In the midst of this chaos, Binier's father played a heroic role, carrying a girl with a broken hip to safety.

The aftermath of Wednesday's high-speed rail disaster in southern Spain has left many questioning the safety measures in place on the country's rail network.

Questions are being raised about how two trains could collide without one being stopped to prevent the accident. The authorities will have to investigate how this happened, especially considering that the same line was the site of a major disaster just last month when 46 people lost their lives outside Córdoba in January. This latest incident has highlighted concerns over the reliability and effectiveness of Spain's rail safety systems.

The incident has also sparked frustration among train staff who are struggling to understand how such a catastrophic event could occur with modern technology available. "How can this happen with the technology we have?," one official was quoted as saying, adding that it is not normal for trains to collide without warning.
