# Grand Theft Auto VI graphics tech showcased through console-exclusive hack

A user has demonstrated a setup that uses advanced graphics technology to enhance the visuals of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5.

Gamers are preparing for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, despite it being a console exclusive, by exploring ways to apply advanced graphics technology to their PlayStation 5 experience.

A user on an unmoderated subreddit has proposed a setup that uses a 4K capture card to send the video signal from the PS5 to a PC. From there, the signal is processed using Veyra, an open-source tool that can apply AI-powered neural rendering and frame generation to enhance the visuals.

This setup aims to harness Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology, which typically requires a high-end graphics card, on a console game. The result is then sent back to a 4K TV for display, potentially offering some benefits of a powerful PC graphics card for the console-exclusive game.

The user demonstrated this setup by applying it to the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look trailer, released in August. While the processed version shows some improvements, such as sharper background elements and more realistic light scattering, it also appears washed out compared to the original video's deeper blacks.

The processed version of the trailer also exhibits an unnatural smoothness, often referred to as the "soap opera effect, which may detract from the overall visual experience.

The upscaled version of GTA VI using Nvidia's DLSS 5 has been observed to produce occasional graphical artifacts and glitches due to the frame generation process.

However, despite these minor drawbacks, the experiment showcases the significant advancements made by DLSS 5 since its early testing phases, which sparked online memes earlier this year. The results demonstrate a notable improvement in the technology's capabilities.

The use of remote frame generation on linear video feeds is distinct from applying it to real-time interactive games like GTA VI. Any software processing involved in preparing the video for upscaling and performing the actual upscaling could introduce substantial delays between player inputs and on-screen responses.

Some users have reported varying levels of input lag when testing similar setups with other PS5 games, ranging from noticeable but tolerable additions to implausible latency increases of around 1-2 milliseconds.

For some PS5 owners, the process of enabling Nvidia's DLSS 5 on GTA VI involves a convoluted setup involving a beefy PC GPU and a PS5 console. This may result in improved performance for certain games, but it could also lead to unwanted visual effects like the hat on a hat" issue.

The alternative is to wait for the game's official PC release, reportedly scheduled for early 2027, or opt for an unofficial decompilation port that leverages AI-assisted technology.
