# Global debt levels reach highest level since World War II

The International Monetary Fund is warning that global debt-to-GDP ratios are at their highest level since World War II and will continue to rise.

Global debt levels are skyrocketing, prompting a warning from the International Monetary Fund that governments must take drastic action to rein in their finances.

The IMF's managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, sounded a dire note in Singapore, where she highlighted the alarming rise in bond yields and their impact on budgets. These rising interest rates have put immense pressure on governments to find ways to manage their debt.

As a result, global debt-to-GDP ratios are now at their highest level since World War II, with projections indicating they will reach 100% in the coming years. This has led Georgieva to emphasize that economic growth alone cannot solve the problem of unsustainable debt levels.

Governments face "very tough political choices" as they struggle to balance their finances and manage the weight of their debt burden. The IMF chief's warning comes ahead of the annual meetings between the IMF and World Bank, set to take place in Bangkok next week.

Global debt levels are soaring, prompting IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva to warn governments that they must tighten their belts in response. This warning comes as a result of rising bond yields, which have reached multi-decade highs in recent weeks.

The sharp increase in interest rates is making borrowing more expensive for many governments, adding to the pressure on already strained budgets. The IMF chief has called for an urgent and comprehensive set of policy responses to address this issue, emphasizing that central banks must be prepared to raise interest rates if necessary.

Georgieva has praised the ECB, US Federal Reserve, and Bank of Japan for their decisions to tighten monetary policy in response to rising inflation. However, she notes that the Bank of England has yet to follow suit, keeping interest rates at 3.75%. The IMF chief suggests that now may be a good time for central banks to adopt a more cautious approach.

The IMF's concerns extend beyond inflation and interest rates, with Georgieva also highlighting the need for governments to address the risks associated with AI. While AI has boosted the US stock market, it has also raised fears of widespread job losses.

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to contribute positively to global economic growth if implemented effectively, according to research by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The organisation's predictions suggest that AI could add half a percentage point to global economic growth.

However, policymakers are being urged to address the potential risks associated with AI, including significant job losses and cyber threats. The Bank of England governor has highlighted the dangers posed by advanced AI models, which he believes require careful management.

The UK government is taking a cautious approach to managing its debt levels, with plans to balance day-to-day spending with tax revenues and gradually reduce the debt-to-GDP ratio over time. This strategy aims to mitigate the risks associated with high levels of borrowing.
