# Evacuation of Ukrainian City of Oleshky Begins Under Ceasefire Agreement

The long-awaited evacuation of the Ukrainian city of Oleshky has finally begun, with a convoy of 25 buses making its way through the area to transport up to 750 people out of the city.

The long-awaited evacuation of the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, occupied by Russian forces, has finally begun. This follows a ceasefire agreement brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, which has been in effect since Tuesday across the entire frontline region of Kherson.

As part of this arrangement, demining efforts have cleared the road out of Oleshky, allowing for the safe passage of residents who wish to leave. A convoy of 25 buses is making its way through the area, with a capacity to transport up to 750 people out of the city by 14:00 (12:00 GMT). In addition to these buses, ambulances are also on hand to assist individuals with limited mobility.

The residents who have opted to leave Oleshky will first need to travel into Russian-occupied territory and then onwards to the southern Russian city of Anapa. Ukrainian territory lies just 5km away from the city, but evacuees will be required to navigate through occupied territory before reaching safety.

Those who are choosing not to evacuate, despite widespread devastation and disruptions to essential services such as gas, electricity, and running water, can rest assured that they will receive humanitarian assistance.

As part of a humanitarian effort, those choosing to stay in Russian-occupied Oleshky will be provided with essential supplies.

Russia has announced plans to deliver "dozens of tonnes" of aid, including food, medicine, hygiene products, and fuel for generators, to residents who opt not to leave. This move comes as an evacuation corridor opens, allowing some residents to board a plane to Gomel in Belarus before crossing into Ukraine's Chernihiv region.

Those staying behind will have access to these supplies, aimed at alleviating the difficulties caused by widespread devastation and disruptions to services such as gas, electricity, and running water. The aid is part of Russia's efforts to provide support to those who choose not to evacuate.

Locals are being given the chance to decide whether they want to leave or stay, with some opting to remain in Oleshky despite the difficulties they face. For those choosing to stay, humanitarian assistance will be available, including essential supplies and services.

Evacuation efforts have commenced in Oleshky, a town under Russian occupation, as a designated corridor for exit has been established.

Olena, who currently resides in Kyiv and has family members remaining in Oleshky, has shared her concerns about the older generation's reluctance to leave their homes. Her grandmother and wider family are among those choosing to stay behind, despite the risks posed by ongoing conflict. This decision is largely driven by a sense of familiarity and attachment to their community.

The humanitarian toll of the occupation has been severe, with Olena recounting the tragic loss of her great-aunt's sister last winter. The elderly woman suffered severe injuries when she stepped on a landmine, which was buried under snow. Her treatment required transportation in a garden wheelbarrow due to the lack of suitable medical facilities and resources.

As the ceasefire continues until November 1st, residents are left to navigate their next steps amidst uncertainty. For those who have chosen not to leave, humanitarian assistance will be available, including essential supplies and services.
