# European Union Launches Investigation into Possible Fraud in Spain's Rail Network Financing

The European Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating allegations of financial mismanagement in the Madrid-Seville high-speed line.

A high-speed train crash in Spain has led to a major investigation into possible fraud in the financing of the country's rail network. The European Union's public prosecutors have launched a probe into allegations of financial mismanagement in the Madrid-Seville high-speed line.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has carried out investigations at the headquarters of Adif, Spain's railway infrastructure manager, as well as its railway safety agency and court of auditors. The offices were visited by EPPO officials to gather evidence on possible fraud affecting EU funds allocated for rail upgrades.

This move comes after an investigation was opened into potential financial irregularities in the renovation and upgrading of safety systems on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line. The probe is aimed at determining whether there has been misuse of European Union funds earmarked for these projects.

Adif, Spain's rail infrastructure manager, confirmed that EPPO officials had visited its headquarters to conduct searches and gather information. However, the other two organizations involved did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters news agency.

The investigation is likely to shed light on any potential financial wrongdoing related to the funding of Spain's high-speed rail network. The probe will also examine whether EU funds have been misused in the renovation and upgrading of safety systems on the Madrid-Seville line.

The European Union's prosecutor office has launched an investigation into a fatal train collision that occurred on October 28 in Urda, Toledo province. The crash was the second major accident to hit Spain this year, following a high-speed train disaster in January that claimed 46 lives.

A probe carried out by the EU prosecutor office earlier this year found issues with how EU funds for track maintenance were used on several network lines, but no updates have been made available on the investigation's findings. The latest crash has raised concerns about safety standards and management practices within Spain's rail network.

EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas expressed his concern over the proximity of these two tragic accidents, describing it as "very worrying" and "not something we want to see". He also noted that Spain had reached out to the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) for assistance with an ongoing national investigation into the crash.

Following the accident, Transport Minister Oscar Puente resigned on Tuesday, citing a "matter of political dignity", while Adif President Luis Pedro Marco de la Pena stepped down the following day. In the meantime, Spain's Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo will take over Puente's role until elections are held later this month, which may be affected by the recent tragedy.

Survivors of three major train crashes in Spain have come together to push for improved safety measures and increased investment in network maintenance.

Train crash survivor Cristobal Gonzalez, who was present at the gathering, emphasized that a lack of action would lead to more disasters. He pointed out that each of the three crashes had different causes: excessive speed at Angrois, track issues at Adamuz, and possibly human error and technical problems with the control system at Urda.

The 2013 train crash at Angrois remains Spain's deadliest rail disaster in recent history, resulting in the loss of 79 lives.
