# Ebola Outbreak Spreads to Nigeria After Reaching Four Countries on Continent

Health officials in Africa are investigating how a Nigerian woman contracted Ebola, sparking fears it could spread further.

Health officials across Africa are scrambling to uncover how a Nigerian woman contracted Ebola, sparking fears that the outbreak could spread further after reaching four countries on the continent.

The mystery began when it was revealed that the patient in Nigeria is the wife of a Swiss diplomat stationed in Abuja. The Swiss foreign ministry confirmed that she had not traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak originated in mid-May and has since spread to Uganda, Kenya, and now Nigeria.

According to the Swiss government, the woman contracted Ebola while traveling with her husband in Uganda. This contradicts earlier claims from Ugandan authorities, who said she had visited eastern DR Congo. The discrepancy raises concerns about the accuracy of information and the ability of authorities to contain the outbreak.

The World Health Organization is leading investigations into the source of infection for the Nigerian patient. Efforts are being made to determine how a country that was declared Ebola-free in August has seen new cases emerge, with the Ugandan government denying any current outbreaks.

A spokesperson from the Ugandan government told Reuters on Thursday that if there were any confirmed Ebola cases, they would be publicly announced.

The investigation into the source of the Ebola infection in Nigeria is ongoing, with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention looking into whether the patient may have come into contact with an Ebola case in Kenya. Both patients travelled from Entebbe airport in Uganda on October 3rd.

According to Dr Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response at the organisation, officials are considering the possibility that the patient contracted the virus while passing through the Ugandan airport. However, this theory is still speculative at this stage.

Meanwhile, WHO staff in DR Congo have found no evidence to suggest the Nigerian patient had travelled to the country, as reported by Catherine Smallwood, a WHO Ebola incident manager. She noted that officials would need to compare the timing of the patient's symptoms with their travel history to determine where the infection likely occurred.

Experts are also weighing in on the possible link between the cases in Kenya and Nigeria, with Marion Koopmans, a Dutch virologist and member of the WHO's Ebola emergency committee, expressing skepticism about the theory. She argued that simply being present at the same airport location does not constitute a supported epidemiological link.

Nigeria's health minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, has stated that contact-tracing is continuing in an effort to contain the outbreak, and that officials are working hard to prevent it from spreading to local communities.

The confirmation of Ebola cases in Kenya and Nigeria has underscored the importance of international cooperation to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Countries must now work closely together to share information and resources in a timely manner, ensuring that frontline health workers and local organizations have what they need to respond quickly to outbreaks.

Ebola is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects both humans and non-human primates, spreading through body fluids or contaminated materials and causing severe damage to organs and blood vessels.

The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved treatment or vaccine, highlighting the need for swift action to contain its spread.
