The Force wasn’t strong with Christopher Walken.
The veteran actor, 78, is speaking out about his failed “Star Wars” audition back in the mid-1970s, saying he wasn’t “remotely close” to snagging a part in the sci-fi franchise.
It’s been reported over the years that Walken was George Lucas’ second choice to play protagonist Han Solo — a role which eventually went to Harrison Ford.
“I did audition [for ‘Star Wars’] but I don’t think I came remotely close to getting the job,” Walken told the Financial Times on Thursday.
“About 500 other actors auditioned, so it wasn’t as if it was down to me and somebody else.”
Walken also revealed he auditioned for Ryan O’Neal’s part in the classic 1970 tearjerker “Love Story.” At the time, he was a relatively unknown stage actor and similarly lost out on that role.
“I was lucky [to have been rejected from both films] because I’d have been awful in them,” Walken candidly claimed.
“Star Wars” was released in 1977 — the same year Walken scored a breakout part as Diane Keaton’s brother in “Annie Hall.”
He went on to become a bona fide star the following year, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Deer Hunter.”
Walken may have never been cast in that movie if he’d snagged the “Star Wars” role, and the course of his career would have been wildly different.
Meanwhile, Walken has recently been spending time in England, filming the new British crime series “The Outlaws.”
The star told the Financial Times he was happy to have some respite from the constant stream of political news in the United States.
The “Wedding Crashers” star, who is a Democrat, stated: “You don’t cover what’s happening with Trump over in England so much — that’s to your credit.”
He went on to explain that he shares several “spooky” similarities with Trump, although none of them involve their political persuasions.
“We’re both from Queens, we’re close to the same age, his mother is from Scotland like mine, his father is German-American like mine,” he stated, before humorously adding: “We both have hair fixations!”
