# BMW Unveils New Electric SUV Model

BMW has released the BMW iX4, a sporty electric SUV that offers up to 428 miles of range on a single charge.

BMW has continued its streak of releasing high-quality electric vehicles as the global market shifts towards sustainable transportation. The latest addition is the BMW iX4, a sporty SUV that puts a unique spin on the company's existing iX3 model.

The iX4 marks the third vehicle to be built on BMW's next-generation Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3 and i3 models. This new lineup aims to counter the influx of Chinese electric vehicles flooding the European market, which has left many other brands struggling to compete.

BMW is positioning its newest lineup as a defensive measure against the growing dominance of Chinese imports in the global automotive industry. However, it remains to be seen whether BMW can match China's pricing strategy, with the iX4 50 xDrive starting at $66,200 before destination and handling fees.

The iX4 features an impressive array of technical specifications, including 2kWh of usable energy, an 800-volt architecture for rapid charging, and an estimated range of up to 428 miles based on EPA estimates.

The BMW iX4's impressive range has left many in the industry wondering if it's overkill. With an estimated 428 miles on a single charge, it surpasses even the Tesla Model Y, currently the world's best-selling electric vehicle.

This trend of exceeding expectations is not new for BMW, as the company continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with its electric vehicles. Even experts at InsideEVs are struggling to comprehend the level of range being achieved by BMW. Meanwhile, other manufacturers like Lucid have struggled despite boasting ranges over 500 miles.

BMW's focus on range and efficiency is clear, and it seems that these aspects will be key selling points for the iX4. Alongside its impressive range, the vehicle also boasts a powerful performance thanks to its dual-motor setup in both the 50 xDrive and M60 xDrive models.

The M60 xDrive's motors are particularly noteworthy, producing 603 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. This results in a 0-60 time of just 6 seconds, making it even more formidable than the 50 xDrive model with its slightly slower 7-second acceleration.

The iX4's powertrain is built around an inverter that plays a crucial role in managing energy flow from the battery to the motor. This high-tech component converts direct current from the battery into alternating current for the motor, regulates the electromagnets, and monitors performance to optimize efficiency.

This advanced design enables BMW to reduce drive-system energy losses by 40 percent and weight by 10 percent, contributing to the overall efficiency of the vehicle. The company's focus on cutting-edge technology has led to significant improvements in the iX4's powertrain.

The Gen6 batteries used in the iX4 have been engineered with cylindrical lithium-ion cells that measure 46mm in diameter and 95mm in height. These cells offer a 20 percent increase in energy density compared to prismatic cells, allowing for more efficient use of space within the vehicle.

BMW's innovative "pack-to-open-body" construction also plays a key role in reducing weight and increasing torsional rigidity. By integrating the battery housing into the vehicle's underbody, BMW has created a more streamlined design that enhances overall performance.

The iX4's Panoramic iDrive system is a redesigned digital dashboard that replaces traditional gauge clusters with a heads-up-style projection along the lower windshield. This futuristic display stretches across the full width of the windshield, providing an immersive driving experience.

A 9-inch central touchscreen serves as a free-cut display where drivers can easily drag and drop up to six widgets, such as media, weather, or navigation, from the screen directly onto the windshield display. This intuitive interface allows for seamless customization of the dashboard's layout.

In addition to its advanced infotainment system, the iX4 also boasts several innovative features, including bidirectional charging capabilities with vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home functionality. The car can even automatically open an intelligent charging flap when approaching a known charging point, making it easier to recharge on the go.

The iX4's comprehensive package is certainly impressive, but some comparisons to other electric vehicles are inevitable. For example, Tesla's Model Y outperforms the iX4 in terms of price and acceleration, while also offering Full Self-Driving capabilities with adjustable steering and braking controls.

The iX4 SUV has a significant feature that allows for hands-free driving on highways, but it does not offer point-to-point assisted driving capabilities like some other electric vehicles on the market.

BMW's lineup offers more variety than Tesla's, with several models to choose from, including the iX4 50 xDrive and the sportier M60 xDrive. Additionally, BMW is also updating its Neue Klasse series, which includes sedans such as the flagship 7 series.

In contrast, Tesla has a limited range of options, with only two main models available: the Model 3 and the Model Y, aside from the niche Cybertruck. Despite this limitation, Tesla's vehicles have gained popularity for their performance and features, but BMW's diverse lineup is likely to appeal to customers who value choice and flexibility in their vehicle purchases.
