# Binance Reports $6.3bn Worth of Digital Assets Compromised in Hack

A major security breach at Binance has resulted in approximately half of the stolen assets being frozen by other platforms.

Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has announced that $6.3bn worth of digital assets have been compromised in what is being described as the "largest hack in history.

The exchange said on Thursday that approximately half of these stolen assets have been frozen with the assistance of other platforms, and pledged to cover all losses incurred by users.

Initial assessments suggest that an engineer's laptop may have been compromised, allowing an attacker to make unauthorized withdrawals. This breach has had a significant impact on Binance's operations, with substantial amounts of digital currency now in the wrong hands.

Security experts at TRM Labs have identified North Korea as the likely perpetrator behind the hack. Their research points to a hacking unit known as TraderTraitor, which is believed to be linked to several earlier cyber attacks, including the 2025 Bybit exchange hack that netted $1.5bn in stolen assets.

TRM's findings are based on AI-powered investigations and analysis of attack patterns, with their chief policy officer Ari Redbord describing the Binance hack as a watershed moment" for the industry due to its unprecedented scale and complexity.

Binance's smaller counterpart in the US has reassured its customers that they are not affected by the security breach at Binance.com.

This means that users of Binance.US can continue trading without interruption, although it is likely that they will be watching developments closely as the situation unfolds.

In a series of tweets, Binance's co-CEO Yi He thanked various cryptocurrency issuers for taking swift action to freeze assets linked to the hack.

Withdrawals from Binance.com have been disabled until further notice, with users advised to wait until the environment is confirmed to be secure before attempting to withdraw their funds.

Binance's massive user base, estimated to be over 300 million worldwide, has been affected by the security breach. The exchange allows users to trade digital assets and has faced regulatory scrutiny globally.

The hack has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin dropping by more than 4% following alerts of a potential issue. Other major cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and Solana also saw significant price drops.

Binance's own financials have been impacted, with its estimated $160 billion in assets under custody potentially vulnerable to the hack.
