# Ashe Reflects on Marriage Inspiration in New Song

US pop singer Ashe has spoken about finding inspiration for her music on her wedding day last October in Nashville.

As she prepared to tie the knot, Ashe's mind flashed back to her first marriage almost a decade earlier, which she described as "horrifying.

She recalled meeting her ex-partner in college and the emotionally manipulative relationship that followed, including being forced into a beachfront wedding despite having an ocean phobia.

The singer, now in her early 30s, admitted to feeling powerless to end the first marriage due to her partner's control.

In contrast, Ashe felt empowered on her second wedding day, with the freedom to walk away if she chose to.

The lyrics of Ashe's song Stop The Wedding have struck a chord with listeners worldwide, resonating particularly with those who've experienced similar situations.

Released in August, the song has rapidly gained popularity on various platforms, becoming one of the top 10 most-played songs globally on Spotify within weeks of its release.

Ashe reflects on her own experience and how it informed her writing process, stating that she wishes someone had given her the insight to trust her instincts earlier.

The line where Ashe sings about burning her wedding dress and running away has been a standout moment for many listeners, highlighting the emotions and desperation that can accompany an unhappy marriage.

Growing up in San Jose in a conservative household had a profound impact on Ashe's life and music career. The radio was always tuned to Christian stations, but it was her grandfather who introduced her to rock music during long road trips, playing the likes of Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.

This exposure sparked something within Ashe, and by her teens she was writing her own music. Her passion for songwriting only grew stronger as she pursued a degree in orchestral composition at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music. After completing her studies, Ashe moved to Nashville where she quickly found work as a songwriter.

One of her early credits was on Demi Lovato's 2017 song You Don't Do It For Me Anymore, but Ashe soon became frustrated that other people were singing her words rather than letting her own voice shine through. This led her to take the bold step of becoming a solo artist under the name Ashe.

Ashe has spoken publicly about the emotional toll of being forced to present herself in a certain way, and how it took time for her to break free from that persona. In an interview, she recalled her grandfather's words of caution when she decided to pursue music as Ashe: He said '\[After this\] no-one's ever going to love you for you. Anyone you meet now is going to meet you as Ashe, and I met you before'.

These words had a lasting impact on Ashe, who has spoken about the manipulative nature of her grandfather's comments and how they kept her stuck in her old identity for far too long.

As Ashe's music career took off in 2019, she found herself performing at larger venues and even duetting with Niall Horan. However, this rapid ascent came with a cost, as work became increasingly all-consuming.

The pressure only intensified when Ashe suffered a personal tragedy in 2020 - her brother passed away from an overdose. Despite the emotional toll, Ashe was back on stage within a month, struggling to cope with the demands of touring.

In retrospect, Ashe acknowledges that she had been taking on too much, sacrificing her well-being for the sake of her career. There was so much momentum and I was saying yes to far too many things, she reflects now, highlighting the unsustainable pace of her life at the time.

As the pressure mounted, Ashe's mental health began to deteriorate. She suffered from panic attacks, making it difficult for her to stomach being in the public eye as herself. This inner turmoil eventually boiled over into a nervous breakdown in 2023.

For six months, Ashe stepped away from showbusiness and focused on rebuilding her life. She spent time in Nashville, where she bought a house and tended to a garden, also seeing a therapist to work through her emotions.

As Ashe navigates the whirlwind success of Stop The Wedding, she's taking a more measured approach to her emotions and surroundings.

To cope with the constant updates on her phone, Ashe has been making time for self-care, including regular four-mile walks and heart-to-hearts with her mom.

In contrast, Ashe's new album, Girl of Your Dreams, is an unapologetically over-the-top affair that showcases her unique blend of style and substance.

The album's lead single, Stop The Wedding, sets the tone with its abrupt tempo changes and introspective lyrics that capture Ashe's inner turmoil.

The album Girl of Your Dreams by Ashe is a deliberate departure from the norm in music production. Drawing inspiration from lush orchestrations reminiscent of ELO and The Carpenters, as well as the revivalist pop style of her friend Laufey, Ashe sought to create something unique.

She has stated that she was tired of making music that lacked excitement, seeking instead to push boundaries and defy expectations. This approach is evident in the album's eclectic sound, which blends different styles and genres. Ashe's desire for creative freedom is reflected in her decision to produce an unconventional record.

The album concludes with a song about finding true love, focusing on the enduring bond between Ashe and musician John Clark Canada. The track features a lively New Orleans funeral band at its closing moments, adding to the sense of celebration and joy that pervades the music. With Girl of Your Dreams" set for release on 16 October, fans are eagerly anticipating this new chapter in Ashe's musical journey.
